A marked change in smell, colour, texture, or the integrity of the package is a sensible reason to stop using the item rather than trying to correct it at home.
Claims such as preservative-free need context. They do not explain every way a product's stability has been addressed, and they do not establish that a water-rich lotion can be compared directly with an oil balm or powder. Start by identifying the product format, then check its directions and packaging. Compare two similar formats if preservation is relevant to your choice.
