What each app processes

Yuka evaluates food and cosmetic products. In its Help Center articles on unrated items, Yuka states that it does not rate nutritional or dietary supplements, protein supplements (such as whey protein or creatine), medications, alcohol, sugar, honey and syrups, infant formula for children aged 0 to 2 years, or pet food, because those product categories require specialized rules outside its general food formula.

Blurrix separates product evaluation into three domain engines: FoodScore for food and drinks, BeautySafe for cosmetics, and SupplementScore for dietary supplements, alongside SwaySniff for reading front-of-pack marketing claims next to the ingredient list and nutrition table.

How each app calculates a product score

Yuka's published food methodology combines three components on a 0 to 100 scale: 60% nutritional quality derived from Nutri-Score (calories, sugar, salt, saturated fat, protein, fiber, fruit, vegetables, and legumes), 30% food additives scored by risk level from public literature, and a 10% bonus for certified organic products. When a food contains an additive that Yuka classifies as high-risk (red dot), the product's maximum score is capped at 49/100. For cosmetics, Yuka evaluates the INCI ingredient list across roughly 12,500 substances: a single high-risk ingredient puts the product below 25/100, and a moderate-risk ingredient puts it below 50/100.

Blurrix's FoodScore engine (v2.19.0) combines nine weighted dimensions totaling 100%: FSA nutrition profile (20%), glycemic impact (15%), fiber and microbiome context (15%), fat quality (13%), NOVA processing level (10%), plant diversity (10%), protein and satiety (8%), additives (7%), and sustainability (2%). BeautySafe (v3.5) and SupplementScore (v3.1.0) apply separate rules for cosmetic formulas and supplement labels.

More score dimensions do not by themselves make a scoring method better; different scores on the same product come from different weighting rules, caps, and category assumptions. You can inspect both approaches directly in the Blurrix methodology and in Yuka's published food methodology and cosmetic evaluation guide.

How missing data and unrecognized barcodes are handled

Open and commercial barcode catalogues often have partial records or older packaging snapshots. On public product records and in the app, Blurrix displays the scoring model version, whether the record is complete or partial, and the data check date when recorded. Categories that naturally have near-zero macronutrients (such as plain tea, water, and herbs) are exempted from incomplete-macro penalties, while single-ingredient culinary fats and oils are scored with pure-fat floors for expected zero fibre and protein. When a scanned barcode is missing from Blurrix and the open databases, the scanner offers label photo capture or manual entry with optical character recognition (OCR).

In Yuka, food items without nutrition values are not rated. When a scanned barcode is unrecognized, the mobile app prompts the user to photograph the front of the package, the nutrition table, and the ingredient list so the product can be added to Yuka's database.

Language, availability, and prices (checked 27 October 2026)

Yuka lists 15 officially supported countries for its iOS and Android apps: the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Mexico, and Brazil. Czechia and a Czech interface are not on the official list, and availability in the Czech App Store or Google Play is unverified. Yuka's core scanning app is free; its annual Premium subscription (adding keyword search, offline mode for 100,000 products, and dietary alerts) starts at 10 EUR/year in Europe, 10 USD/year in the US, and 10 GBP/year in the UK (15 EUR/year on the web; CZK pricing is unverified).

Blurrix runs in Czech and English as a web application at app.blurrix.com, with access currently granted through the free early-access form on this site (native iOS and Android store releases are not public yet). Barcode scanning is included on the free Base tier. Current introductory paid plans in the Blurrix web app, checked 27 October 2026, are Pro at 299 CZK/month or 2,390 CZK/year (equals 199 CZK/month) and Ultra at 599 CZK/month or 4,990 CZK/year (equals 416 CZK/month), billed in CZK.

Documented strengths of Yuka

Public sources document several clear strengths of Yuka: its proprietary database covers 3.6 million to 4 million food products and 2 million to 2.3 million cosmetic products; its free tier includes barcode scanning, additive risk breakdowns, and independent recommendations for higher-scoring alternative products; and Yuka publishes a strict independence policy stating that it accepts no brand funding or in-app advertising.
