Short sleep and appetite: association is not a personal diagnosis

A short night and a different appetite the next day may occur together, but a single pattern does not reveal its cause. Appetite also changes with routine, food access, stress, illness and many other factors.

What consensus guidance says

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society published a consensus recommendation for adult sleep duration. It is population guidance, not a diagnosis of a person who sleeps less on some nights.

Use the evidence proportionately

Studies by St-Onge and colleagues investigate sleep and eating-related outcomes under particular designs. They add evidence to a topic, but they do not justify a claim that short sleep determines a person's hormones, appetite or body weight. Persistent sleep concerns deserve appropriate professional advice. See our methodology.

Limitations: Population guidance and study associations cannot diagnose the cause of appetite or sleep changes in one person.
